Role Overview


The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) at Pharmacosmos is a non-promotional, hybrid role that combines traditional field-based medical activities with strategic medical advisor responsibilities.

The MSL provides non-promotional scientific information and medical education, drives data generation, establishes value-adding partnerships with healthcare professionals engaged in Iron Deficiency with or without anaemia (ID/IDA) care and supports the marketing and commercial teams, as appropriate.

This role will be part of a team of eight MSL's, regionally located across the UK & IE and covering a variety of therapy areas including cardiology, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynaecology, nephrology, and surgery.

What will you do


External Stakeholder Relationships


  • Provide high quality scientific information to healthcare professionals (HCPs) in response to specific requests
  • Initiate and maintain strong engagement with HCPs and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs)
  • Support data generation through HCP-initiated projects by providing support for medical writing, data analysis, and publication, in line with current ethical publishing guidelines
  • Support implementation of local best-practice protocols for the treatment of iron deficiency with or without anaemia (ID/IDA)
  • Develop and roll-out educational concepts in target therapeutic areas focusing on ID/IDA awareness and screening, guideline recommendation and ID/IDA treatment
  • Support the provision of educational meetings focused on ID/IDA management by interacting with HCP speakers to provide briefings around compliance, product information, clinical and scientific data, and support development of presentations
  • Support advisory boards, where necessary, to gain key opinion leader insights into ID/IDA

Internal Stakeholder Relationships


  • Establish themselves as an internal product expert
    • More experienced MSLs will also have the opportunity to become therapy area (TA) leads
    • Provide close cross-functional collaborative working with sales and marketing teams
    • Provide internal scientific training with sales and marketing teams
    • Input into the development of company materials and act as a compliance reviewer for sales and marketing materials, where necessary
  • Proactively identify areas of development for assigned therapeutic area, input into medical plans and execute medical affairs strategy by taking actions that lead to advances ensuring optimal patient treatment
  • Take an active role in clinical trials: Input into the clinical development plan, study design and protocols to ensure that UK needs are addressed. Proactively identify data gaps and work with relevant stakeholders to fill unmet needs. Drive company-sponsored studies and have full responsibility for assigned investigator-sponsored studies (ISS)

Additions to Role and Responsibilities as Senior MSL


  • Expand Therapy Area knowledge and take on the role as Therapy Area (TA) Lead, supporting an MSL as a co-lead and mentor
  • Develop experience and exposure by supporting the Lead MSL for their region with additional local and national projects
  • Deputise for Lead MSL where required

Additions to Role and Responsibilities as Lead MSL


  • Support the Head of Field Based Medical Affairs with team management, mentoring and coaching
  • MSL line management responsibility
  • Create and implement TA strategy and tactics for their respective regions
  • Work with L&D to identify how to best support and develop MSLs e to take an active lead on training colleagues across functions
  • Support MSLs with best practice on cross functional collaboration
  • Support Head of Field Based Medical Affairs with MAF budget management

General


  • Possess superlative communication skills
  • Act to the highest ethical standards
  • Have an excellent understanding of the (2021) ABPI Code Practice and serve as a compliance advisor for internal teams, where necessary
  • Fulfil Pharmacovigilance responsibilities as defined in the pharmacovigilance SOPs related to medical enquiries and drug safety information, and proactively collect information on the safety profile of Pharmacosmos’ products

What We Expect of You


  • Holds a life-science degree (e.g., BSc)
    • An advanced degree in life-sciences (MSc or PhD) medicine or pharmacy would be an advantage
  • Has pharmaceutical experience, including time spent in Field Medical and/or Medical Affairs
  • Has a proven track-record of translating scientific or clinical data into messages to help HCPs to best serve their patients through collaboration with KOLs and strategic stakeholders
  • Experienced and highly conversant with the NHS and its workings
    • Knowledge of the Irish Healthcare system would be an advantage
  • Has an established network of UK HCPs
    • A network in the anaemia community would be an advantage
  • The Senior MSL role will bring in addition to the above 3 years MSL experience
  • The Lead MSL role will bring in addition to the above a proven background in team management/ mentoring / guiding / supporting

Location and Travel


  • Field based role based
  • The MSL / Senior MSL / Lead MSL covers a dedicated territory within one of four regions (Celtic, North, East, and West regions).
  • Regular travel within the region/UK and occasional international travel is excepted.
  • A Driver’s license is required
  • Able to travel to domestic and international scientific and internal company meetings
